The Challenge

Lakefront Brewery, producing 33,368 barrels annually and distributing in 35 states, needed to upgrade its bottle-filling equipment to meet expanding consumer demand. The brewery required precision oxygen measurement control within ±1.5 mL to maintain craft beer quality.

The Solution

The brewery installed new filling equipment from KHS featuring an Allen-Bradley CompactLogix controller with EtherNet/IP connectivity, servo drives and motors, PanelView Plus HMI with FactoryTalk View software. Motion Analyzer software helped size and select the optimal servo-motor solution.

Results

Production speed increased from 120 to 180 bottles per minute with the ability to surge to 400 bpm. Quality improved with an 80-90% error reduction in measuring oxygen parts per million.

Key Takeaways

  • Servo-based filling systems for craft breweries can improve production speed by 50% while simultaneously improving quality metrics
  • Ethernet/IP connectivity enables seamless integration between controllers, servo drives, and motors in a unified control environment
  • For craft brewers, oxygen measurement accuracy directly impacts product quality and brand reputation
