FrieslandCampina, one of the world's largest dairy cooperatives, faced mounting pressure to substantiate the provenance of its FRISO infant formula brand in markets where food safety trust is a direct purchasing decision. Following high-profile contamination incidents across the industry, consumers in Asia and other safety-sensitive regions increasingly demanded verifiable proof of origin and handling — not just brand assurances. Without a consumer-accessible traceability system, FrieslandCampina had no mechanism to demonstrate FRISO's full product journey at the point of consumer interaction, leaving the brand unable to differentiate on transparency and vulnerable to trust erosion in its highest-value segments.
FrieslandCampina collaborated with Kezzler and Rockwell Automation to develop the FRISO TrackEasy smart packaging solution. Each FRISO product receives a unique digital identity through the Kezzler Connected Products Platform, which captures and links data across the entire production chain. On the manufacturing side, Rockwell Automation's FactoryTalk PharmaSuite — a serialization application originally engineered for pharmaceutical track-and-trace compliance — records production-layer events and quality checkpoints. The two systems integrate to create a continuous data chain from farm milk sourcing through processing, packaging, and distribution. Consumers scan a code on the package to access the complete product journey in real time. This architecture bridges factory-floor execution data with a consumer-facing transparency layer, repurposing pharmaceutical-grade serialization infrastructure for food and beverage brand engagement.
FRISO TrackEasy achieved global availability of end-to-end product journey tracking across the brand's key markets, giving every consumer with a smartphone access to verifiable provenance data. FrieslandCampina reported increased sales directly attributable to the TrackEasy feature, demonstrating that transparency functions as a revenue driver in the infant formula category. Consumer trust and brand loyalty metrics improved alongside adoption. The implementation also generated an operational return: the same serialization infrastructure that powers consumer-facing scans delivers internal supply chain visibility and control, enabling faster response to distribution anomalies. A secondary benefit was consumer and consumption insights derived from scan behavior — data that informs marketing and product strategy beyond the traceability use case.
