Henshaw Achieves Threefold Capacity Increase with ControlLogix 5580 CNC Retrofit

3xMachine Capacity Increase

The Challenge

Henshaw needed to extend the life, enhance functionality, and boost productivity of 20-year-old CNC equipment controlling a 12-station rotary dial machining cell. Replacing the legacy CNC system with a more modern approach was needed to remain competitive.

The Solution

Allen-Bradley ControlLogix 5580 controller, PowerFlex 527 AC drive, Kinetix 5700 EtherNet/IP servo drive, PanelView Plus 7 graphic terminal, and MobileView tethered operator terminal were deployed to create a Programmable Numeric Control (PNC) solution.

Results

A threefold increase in machine capacity was achieved. Machine flexibility improved significantly compared to the legacy system. The solution controls the complex 12-station rotary dial machining cell entirely within the Rockwell Automation platform.

Key Takeaways

  • Retrofitting 20-year-old CNC equipment with modern PLC-based PNC can triple machining capacity on the same physical equipment
  • EtherNet/IP servo drive integration eliminates the proprietary interfaces that limited CNC system upgrades in the past
  • Tethered mobile operator terminals are essential for safely operating large rotary machining cells
