RSSI Vehicle Barrier Reduces Annual Maintenance Costs 87% Compared to Hydraulic Systems

3 secondsNormal Operating Speed
1.5 secondsEmergency Operation Speed

The Challenge

Facility security operators needed an alternative to hydraulic vehicle barriers that suffered from high maintenance costs, environmental concerns with hydraulic fluid, and slower operation speeds. A reliable all-electric, crash-rated barrier was required.

The Solution

Allen-Bradley CompactLogix controllers, Kinetix servo drives, and MP-Series Heavy-Duty Electric Cylinders were deployed to create an all-electric crash-tested vehicle wedge barrier replacing hydraulic systems.

Results

Annual maintenance costs were reduced by more than 87% compared to hydraulic systems. Normal operating speed is 3 seconds (2 seconds faster than hydraulic) and emergency fast operation is 1.5 seconds. Environmental concerns from hydraulic fluid were eliminated.

Key Takeaways

  • All-electric vehicle barriers with servo drives reduce maintenance costs by 87% versus hydraulic equivalents while improving response speed
  • Electric cylinder-based barriers eliminate hydraulic fluid environmental hazards at secure facilities
  • Software-configurable electric barriers allow specification changes through control system updates rather than mechanical modifications
