ESTRA Automotive Enhances Production Traceability and Quality with Opcenter MES

The Challenge

Automotive component suppliers face some of the industry's most demanding quality and compliance requirements. ESTRA Automotive Systems, a specialist in vehicle thermal components and cooling systems since 1998, had built its reputation supplying leading OEMs — a position that made production traceability non-negotiable. As production complexity grew with new machines and lines added to meet customer-specific requirements, relying on paper-based processes and disconnected systems made it increasingly difficult to track components across the full manufacturing lifecycle, maintain consistent quality standards, and generate the documentation that automotive customers and regulators require. The gap between shop-floor reality and business systems was creating operational inefficiency and quality risk.

The Solution

ESTRA implemented Opcenter Execution Discrete, Siemens' manufacturing execution system (MES) from the Xcelerator platform, to digitize and centralize production management. The deployment covered a comprehensive set of both standard and company-specific functionalities — replacing manual, paper-driven workflows with real-time digital data collection and analysis at each production step. Critically, Opcenter was integrated directly with ESTRA's existing SAP ERP system, creating a bidirectional information bridge between business planning and shop-floor execution. This eliminated the data silos that had existed between production and business operations. Siemens positioned the MES as the factory's operational core — its 'nervous system and brain' — with ESTRA also planning a future integration of Teamcenter software to close the loop across PLM, ERP, and manufacturing operations management.

Results

The Opcenter implementation delivered measurable improvements across traceability, quality, and operational efficiency. Every component can now be tracked from raw material receipt through to finished product, giving ESTRA the end-to-end production record that automotive OEMs demand. Key outcomes include:

  • Full component traceability across the entire production lifecycle, from raw materials to finished goods
  • Seamless ERP-MES data flow between SAP and Opcenter, eliminating manual reconciliation between business and production systems
  • Error reduction through real-time data collection that enables faster identification and correction of process deviations
  • Paperwork reduction as digital workflows replaced manual recording on the shop floor

Workers gained the ability to handle production orders more efficiently, with quality data captured at the point of production rather than reconstructed after the fact.

Key Takeaways

  • MES-ERP integration is the foundation: ESTRA's results depended on tight Opcenter-SAP connectivity — evaluate integration capability before selecting an MES platform.
  • Traceability must be designed in, not bolted on: Automotive OEMs increasingly require component-level genealogy; a reactive approach to compliance creates rework and audit risk.
  • Plan for extensibility from day one: ESTRA's roadmap to add Teamcenter for PLM closure shows that an initial MES deployment should be chosen with future process integrations in mind.
  • Standardize before customizing: Opcenter's standard functionalities provided the baseline; company-specific extensions built on top — not instead of — that foundation.
  • Digital transformation in discrete manufacturing is incremental: New machines and lines were continuously added into the same MES framework, enabling growth without complexity accumulation.
