Cosmos Industrial achieves 50% productivity increase with NX

The Challenge

Cosmos Industrial Co., Ltd, founded in 2005 and operating as one of Vietnam's leading automotive component manufacturers, faced mounting pressure to remain competitive while meeting the precise engineering tolerances demanded by domestic and international automobile and motorcycle OEMs. Manual and fragmented CAD/CAM workflows created bottlenecks across machining operations, limiting the throughput of their DMG Mori CNC equipment and constraining their ability to take on higher volumes of FDI localization work. Without an integrated digital manufacturing environment, machine tools ran below peak capacity and resolving programming errors consumed valuable production time — directly threatening their ability to deliver high-quality parts at competitive prices.

The Solution

Cosmos partnered with Vietbay, a certified Siemens PLM Software reseller in Vietnam, to implement Siemens NX CAM software as the backbone of an integrated CAD/CAM/CNC workflow. The deployment connected design data directly to CNC machining programs, eliminating manual re-entry and reducing the opportunity for programming errors. NX's digital manufacturing capabilities — including virtual NC simulation, which serves as a digital twin of the machining environment — allowed engineers to validate toolpaths and detect collisions offline before any cutting occurred. The solution was integrated with Cosmos's existing DMG Mori 4-axis and 3-axis milling machines, maximizing utilization of capital equipment already on the shop floor and enabling the engineering team to run all machine tools at full capacity.

Results

After implementing Siemens NX CAM, Cosmos Industrial recorded measurable gains across its machining operations:

  • 50% increase in productivity across CNC programming and machining workflows
  • 50% improvement in production efficiency, reducing overall manufacturing time and associated costs

Beyond the headline numbers, the integrated CAD/CAM/CNC environment reduced cycle time for NC program generation and allowed engineers to identify and resolve machining issues virtually rather than on the shop floor. The ability to simulate machining operations ahead of cutting reduced costly setup errors and scrap. These gains strengthened Cosmos's position as a reliable supplier to foreign direct investment enterprises requiring localized, high-precision automotive components.

Key Takeaways

  • Integrating CAD, CAM, and CNC into a single software environment eliminates handoff errors that silently erode production efficiency in precision machining operations.
  • Virtual NC simulation — a form of digital twin for the machining cell — is a high-ROI entry point for automotive suppliers before broader digital transformation investments.
  • Partnering with a locally certified reseller (Vietbay/Siemens PLM) accelerated deployment and ensured support aligned with regional manufacturing context.
  • Existing capital equipment (CNC machines) can yield significantly higher returns when paired with modern CAM software, without requiring hardware replacement.
  • For mid-tier automotive suppliers in emerging markets, technology investment is a direct lever for qualifying as a localization partner for multinational OEMs.
